SONG AND DANCE CELEBRATION COUNCIL SUPPORTS LATVIAN SONG DAY IN BRUSSELS

Created on 2013-12-11

On December 11, 2013, The Latvian Song and Dance Celebration Council supported the organization of the Latvian Song day in Brussels in June of 2015. The song day is planned to have concerts and performances from the most active and distinguished Latvian diaspora artistic collective in Brussels, and will be part of the programme of Fête de la Musique (World Music Day).

The Latvian Song Day in Brussels will be a great lead into Latvian Song and Dance tradition, demonstrating both centuries old traditions and modern culture expressions of our nation and showing the great unity of the nation through songs and dances. Latvian Song Day in Brussels will give an illustration of the phenomenon of Latvian Song and Dance Festival, which takes place in Latvia every 5 years and in 2013 had more than 40 000 dancers and singers.

The Latvian Song Day in Brussels will be organized by the Latvian National Centre for Culture in cooperation with the diaspora organizations – Association of Free Latvians of the World and the European Latvian Association and with the support of the Secretariat of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture, and the Latvian Embassy in Belgium.

During the first six months of 2015 when Latvia is the presiding state of the Council of the European Union, we would like not only to be heard through political matters, but also through a cultural prism throughout Europe and the world. Therefore the Song and Dance Festival, an intangible cultural masterpiece as acknowledged by UNESCO, is one of the traditions which along with other significant and magnificent Latvian cultural displays will be presented to Europe by the Public Diplomacy and Cultural Programme of the Presidency.

The Song and Dance Celebration Council will also support the organization of an exhibition of national folk costumes in Germany and Luxembourg through which in modern way introduce Song and Dance festival traditions and in particular national costumes, the art of their production and wearing.
