Discover 500 year old books and Latvian avant-garde art

Unique 500-year old books and examples of most distinctive Latvian avant-garde art can be seen at the Latvian National Library which offers two recently opened exhibitions that come with Latvia’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

There are more than 80 books in the exhibition, all printed in 1514. The books were brought to Riga from the biggest European libraries and they offer a unique opportunity to travel 500 years in the past.

The exhibition “1514.Book.2014” will be held in the recently opened National Library of Latvia until 1 April 2015.

Another exhibition, “Visionary Structures. From Ioganson to Johansons”, offers an insight into Latvia’s avant-garde art of the 20th and 21st centuries, exploring the most experimental and visionary phenomena in each given period and their historical transformations.

“Visionary Structures. From Ioganson to Johansons” can be seen at National Library of Latvia until 6 August 2014. The exhibition will then travel to Brussels, where it will be on display at BOZAR, The Centre for Fine Arts from 13 February 2015 until 31 May 2015 as part of the Public Diplomacy and Culture Programme of Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
